Darrell Powers

Experience and Career

Darrell has been in law enforcement since 1997, working his way up from his first position in the detention center, working in nearly every position inside a functioning and successful Sheriff’s Office.  He has seen firsthand the impact of crime on a community and knows what it takes to make a difference.

 

He is a strong and experienced leader with a proven track record of success. He is the only candidate in this race with the knowledge, training, and experience who is willing to make Wilkes County a safer place for everyone.​ He has amassed thousands of hours of advanced training from:

  • The Georgia Public Safety Training Center

  • Columbus State University

  • Regional Counter Drug Training Academy

  • Southern Police institute

  • National Criminal Enforcement Association

  • and many others...

His also a certified instructor for the Georgia Peace officer Standards and Training Council.

Darrell has collected many accolades and appointments:

  • He has been sworn in as an expert witness in both State and Federal Courts.

  • He has received nationally recognized awards.

  • He has instructed hundreds of students, from basic police academy to advanced patrol personnel.

  • He has published articles on K9 Training and Tactics.

Darrell is also a lifelong learner, always seeking ways to improve his skills and knowledge making him the best candidate for this position.

Here are some specific examples of his experience in Law enforcement that can help make Wilkes County a safer place:

  • As a jailer in Greene County, Darrell worked to improve conditions in the jail and maintain a clean safe environment for both inmates and employees.

  • As a patrol deputy in Greene County, Darrell arrested thousands of criminal offenders that include drug couriers, gang members, burglars, and many other types of criminals.

  • As an investigator in Butts County, Darrell helped solve several cold cases and worked directly with the Sheriff to establish and implement a plan to successfully reduce the rising gang activity.

  • As Command Staff in Butts County, he worked directly with the Sheriff to reduce the budget while still reducing crime.

  • As Command Staff in Butts County, he worked directly with the Sheriff to establish programs to bridge the gap between Sheriff's Office and the communities. For example, Sheriff's Cause for Santa Clause, Citizens Police Academy, Citizen Firearm Class, and Citizen Advisory Board.

Personal

Darrell is running for Sheriff of Wilkes County, Georgia. He has had close ties to Wilkes County for the last 15 years and has become a permanent resident. He has always been included in his community. He is married and a devoted father. He and his wife own and operate Plus 3 Contracting, LLC, which does remodeling and an occasional home they remodel and sell: the last two have been in Washington. They have owned and operated this company since 2016. They also own and operated Plus 3 Builders, LLC which has been building custom homes on their land since 2020.

Darrell has always been an active member of his community.  Some examples are as follows:

  • He coached baseball for 13 years from T-Ball to Varsity High School. 

  • He sat on the board as a parent representative for the Putnam County High School Charter School System.

  • He assisted in the starting of the Sheriff’s Cause for Santa Clause and participated in the supervision of the program in Butts County, where more than 2700 children have received Christmas. 

  • He was the youth director at Grace Baptist Church.

  • He was the station Chief at his local volunteer fire station for two years before starting his Law Enforcement career. 

  • Locally, he has supported and continues to support the WW Tiger Club, Wilkes County Kids, and other local youth-focused organizations.

 

After raising five children Darrell’s understanding of our children’s future is paramount.

  • As Major over community relations at the Butts County Sheriff’s Office and 3rd in command to the Sheriff, he supervised and managed Butts County’s School Resource Officer Program and the C.H.A.M.P.S. Program. He understands the important relationship that our local law enforcement must have with our local school system so that we can have a safe and structured environment for our children to learn and our teachers to work.
